In this episode of The Possibility Club, we focus on the charity sector. UK charities are thought to have lost over £4bn in income between March and June in 2020, with over half directly impacted. One report has suggested that 1 in 10 charities now face bankruptcy. But why do we have charities? To fill the gaps where the state has failed, or to provide the costly specialist services - that would make no money in the private sector - with a depth and expertise that cannot be provided by more general services? Either, or maybe both, you’ll hear in this podcast just how much demand has risen with people turning to compassionate experts to help with the darkest of lockdown challenges. What we do then - at a time of greatest need and diminishing resource? Is it time to re-assess what charities we need, or time to be bolder in how we invest in all of them. Answering our questions in this episode are four people from across the UK who know the value of frontline charitable services, and spend their time navigating complex and broken systems just to deliver fundamental support to those how need it most. Directors, impact evaluators and key workers - these voices delve into the reality of keeping the wheels turning in difficult times, when the consequences of not doing so are unthinkable. ---- Related links: Groundwork East - https://www.groundwork.org.uk/hubs/east/ Together Co - https://togetherco.org.uk/ ----- Thank you to everyone who generously contributed their thoughts and expertise on this episode.
