If we step back and look at the economic winners and losers during COVID-19, in particular the industries who have managed to weather the storm and those which have partially collapsed - it is fair to say that construction has done, on the whole, OK. In many ways the last industry to shut down and the first to re-open, the building trades are better suited to working in a pandemic than many- with experience of working outside, in full PPE, and often with options to socially distance. Investment in big commercial capital developments may have been stalled, but domestic projects - as people turn their homes into offices, or get the loft converted with the unspent family holiday budget, some construction companies and architects are busier than ever. But is this an accurate picture of the sector’s health. What was happening before - and is this moment a chance to fully embrace and invest in a high-skilled, greener, more tech savvy, more consumer friendly part of the UK economy? Answering our questions in this episode are Scott - who runs an electrical company; Ian - the sales manager of an technical installation company and Sarra - the co-founder of an accredited building contractor. What next for the construction sector, and has it all been as rosy as many make out? ---- Related links: https://www.gmmonk.co.uk/ http://www.ashdownav.com/ https://www.hawesbuilding.co.uk/ --- Thank you to everyone who generously contributed their thoughts and expertise on this episode.
