In this podcast always possible Chief Executive, Richard Freeman, has a conversation with Bobby Barry and Emily Mary Barnett about making music that is experimental, challenging, interesting and unusual - with a new take on the original musical Avant-Garde of the 1940s and 1950s. Richard asks Bobby and Emily whether this music is more of an experience than something to be listened to on its own and whether cynics who dismiss experimentalism as pretentious and craftless have opinions that should be respected. Is making an electronic soundscape so different from writing a pop-song? Could anyone do it? And are genres and scenes important when pushing music into new directions? When working together, Bobby Barry and Emily Mary Barnett are better known as music duo Far Rainbow and as founders of the Zero Wave club nights, home of one of London’s most acclaimed experimental music scenes. Bobby is a composer, producer, teacher and writer, who had top 40 chart success as creator of indie-pop girl group The Pipettes in 2003. His solo act Monster Bobby has developed a following in the electronic music scene, and many other new music devotees regularly read his criticism in The Quietus, The Wire and Art Review. Bobby’s book ‘The Music Of The Future’ was published in 2017. Emily Mary Barnett is an artist, photographer and drummer. Her work has always combined physical visual art, layered from unusual materials, with live performance and events. Her most well-known curations are The Shindig Club in Brighton and the No events in East London. Emily was recently artist-in-residence with Theatre Deli and her 3D paintings were exhibited at London’s ASC Gallery and the Dronica Festival in 2017.
