The Possibility Club is a place for conversations about big ideas with the people behind change in business, culture and education Richard Freeman's special guest this week is Professor Martin Doel CBE. Martin has been one of the most influential voices in British military training and then the wider further education system for decades. For 28 years, Air Commander Doel rose through the ranks of the RAF before becoming the Director of Training for the three armed serviced and the civilian Ministry of Defence staff - and was then appointed Chief Executive of the Association of Colleges in 2008. His tenure at the AoC saw Martin representing over 300 education institutions and over 2 million students during some of the biggest infrastructural, financial and policy challenges that the post-16 and adult education sector has ever seen. He has been awarded an OBE and CBE in recognition of both his frontline military career and services to education. In 2016, Martin became the first Chair of Further Education & Skills at the UCL Institute of Education, a professorship funded by the Further Education Trust for Leadership. Richard and Martin spoke in late April 2018, and explore what further education actually means, the changing relationship between business and education and whether the conversation we’re having about skills and life-long learning is the right one. --- Useful links: http://fetl.org.uk/inspiration-thinking/chair-in-fe-leadership/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqnJF4CqdPw https://soundcloud.com/ioelondon/defining-further-education-does-it-matter --- The Possibility Club is more than a podcast, but a peer network for adventurers who want to continue learning and developing the capacity and agency to make big changes in the world.
